Former Sunderland striker Jose Altidore came off the bench to score the winner as Toronto FC kept their push for a first play-off place going with a 2-1 victory over Montreal Impact in the MLS.

Michael Bradley also scored at BMO Field as they won for the 11th time in the league this term, matching last season's record haul of successes.

Toronto now have nine games left to complete in the regular campaign and with seven of them coming at home, they are in a good position to make the 12-team play-offs.

They currently sit fourth in the Eastern Conference and with two games in hand, could potentially move a point behind leaders DC United.

Bradley broke the deadlock with his fourth goal of the season 10 minutes before the break then Altidore got his 10th of the campaign 10 minutes after the restart when he converted a rebound.

Former Toronto forward Dominic Oduro pulled one back for Montreal against his old club with 16 minutes remaining but they couldn't find an equaliser.

That proved costly for their coach Frank Klopas as he lost his job in the hours after the game. His assistant Mauro Biello will now take over on an interim basis.

Former Wolves striker Kevin Doyle struck again as he scored the winner 14 minutes from full-time as Colorado Rapids record a third successive victory in their meeting with Sporting Kansas City.

It was the first time he had netted in consecutive games and brought the designated player's tally for the campaign up to four.

Uruguayan Diego Fagundez became the youngest player to score 25 MLS goals as his New England Revolution side defeated Philadelphia Union 1-0.

It was their third straight victory and striker Fagundez – aged 20 years, six months and 15 days – struck after being set up by USA international Charlie Davies.

Colombus Crew beat New York City 2-1 to move to second in the Eastern Conference after Justin Meram's goal seven minutes from the end.

That came after City's Andrew Jacobson cancelled out Federico Higuain's header in the opening 20 minutes of the match at Yankee Stadium, where Frank Lampard was substituted after an hour

Ex-Bolton boss Owen Coyle's Houston scored through Ricardo Clark and Raul Rodriguez as they recorded a 2-0 victory over nine-man Vancouver to end a three-game run without a win.

And Shea Salinas' header handed San Jose Earthquakes a 1-0 California Clasico success against LA Galaxy, who had Leonardo sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

In other games, Orlando City earned a 1-1 draw with Chicago Fire through Eric Gehrig's own goal and FC Dallas' Tesho Akindele and Fabian Castillo scored in a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake.
